Bakers in Hungary: April 1 update from Budapest

Budapest has heart shaped lights shining through the building windows to show support to those involved in Medical Service.

From the Bakers in Budapest:

We have been able to spend time talking to people, listening and praying with them. Many have lost their income. Some just want to talk and share their difficult experiences. We have an opportunity to point them to God and encourage them with truth.

  • Pray that internet Bible study groups would start, and book clubs, reading books and meeting on line to talk about them as we read.
  • Pray for a men’s online Bible study group to start next week, and that the people invited will join, and that God would add to the group.

We are thinking of everyone back home and here abroad. We hope all are doing well. May God bless you with His Love and His Peace during this time and always!

Bakers in Hungary: people starting to take this seriously

For those who were wondering more about the situation here, schools, clubs, sports, etc. closed March 16. Large groups are banned from meeting but some small church groups are still meeting. Most people are working from home. Stores and restaurants are still open with limited hours. Public transportation is still operating but they are cleaning everything, even the paper money is being quarantined and cleaned by the Hungarian bank. No one is required to wear a mask or gloves, and people are still allowed outside. Hand sanitizer is out of stock, masks are for sale at the pharmacy, and there is plenty of toilet paper. We chose to start self-quarantine March 12 because of possible exposure. There was a panic rush at the stores last week with many items running out of stock – mostly the fresh meat! The border is closed to foreigners, and we will not be going anywhere for awhile. Hungary’s rate of infection is still very low, but wide-spread testing isn’t being done. I think people are getting over the shock and are starting to take this seriously.

New Hope trauma healing training

Too many around us suffer from the hidden scars of life traumas that have never been properly dealt with. The last week of June four national believers and two IMB Team Hungary couples, Gary & Carolyn Miller and Monte & April Baker, took part in a New Hope conference in Budapest.  During the four-day training we practiced techniques for working with trauma survivors to promote healing in a Bible-based, small-group setting.

We are so thankful for the training opportunity and pray that we  will be able to apply what we’ve learned in future small group ministry.

Intercede for trauma survivors in Hungary, that they will find healing and hope through the application of biblical truth in a loving environment. Ask that they will learn that no matter what has happened – or is happening – in their lives, they can trust the Father to walk through it with them and give them grace and healing.

The historic Baptist church in the Rákospalota neighborhood of Budapest kindly hosted the conference.  It was a blessing for the Millers to get to know the people there and to spend a good part of Sunday with them; Gary was asked to preach the Sunday morning sermon, and a family graciously invited us into their home for a wonderful meal and time of fellowship. In the photo of the pulpit and organ, note the Scripture verse carved on the front of the pulpit:  “The Word of God stands forever.” Pray for the dear brothers and sisters of the Rákospalotai Baptist church as they minister to those around them. Month of Prayer Day 31: Gary and Carolyn Miller

Photo of Gary and Carolyn MillerPray today for Gary and Carolyn Miller, IMB personnel based in the city of Debrecen. (Debrecen on Wikipedia)  Gary serves as Team Leader for the IMB Budapest Team and the Eastern Hungary Team, and Carolyn is the Team Prayer Coordinator.  Ask God to grant them His wisdom in ministry, as well as daily strength, health, and safety as they travel.

Current primary ministries that need your prayer are a church plant in the town of Berekfürdő in partnership with the Karcag Baptist Church, and the continuing development of a gardening outreach ministry, the “Master’s Gardeners” in Debrecen.  (Posts about the Berekfürdő church plant and the gardening program.)

Month of Prayer Day 30: Békásmegyer

Today let’s pray for Békásmegyer, a neighborhood in Budapest’s District III.  Consisting of more than 40,000 people within 2 square miles, there is a real need for a church plant in the area.  IMB Budapest personnel Monte and April Baker and children recently moved to Békásmegyer with the goal of starting a group that will grow into a new church.  Békásmegyer on Wikipedia   /  Posts about Békásmegyer

  • Pray that God will open the doors for a church plant in Békásmegyer.
  • Intercede that the Bakers will find persons of peace that will help open up relationships in the area and national partners to serve alongside in a new ministry there.
