A turning point for Sáránd

Sáránd, a village near Debrecen in eastern Hungary, is 800 years old! As a part of this week’s “village days” celebrations, a big all-day event will be taking place on the sports field today, Saturday, September 21. There will be cultural activities, food, kids’ programs, and lots of mixing and mingling of community members.

Several of our dear friends and national partners live in the village and have been working to plant a church there* – they invite us to pray with them for all who will visit the „Sárándi Baptist Good News tent” today. Pray that many spiritual conversations will take place and that the Lord will use this special event to draw people to Himself; intercede for encouragement and strength for our precious brother and sisters in Christ who long for a new church and are shining the light of the gospel in a place that has not been receptive in the past. May today be a spiritual turning point in the village of Sáránd!

*Note: this mission point is a work by and for nationals. We are very encouraged to see their faith in action and want to encourage them through our prayers!

New Hope trauma healing training

Too many around us suffer from the hidden scars of life traumas that have never been properly dealt with. The last week of June four national believers and two IMB Team Hungary couples, Gary & Carolyn Miller and Monte & April Baker, took part in a New Hope conference in Budapest.  During the four-day training we practiced techniques for working with trauma survivors to promote healing in a Bible-based, small-group setting.

We are so thankful for the training opportunity and pray that we  will be able to apply what we’ve learned in future small group ministry.

Intercede for trauma survivors in Hungary, that they will find healing and hope through the application of biblical truth in a loving environment. Ask that they will learn that no matter what has happened – or is happening – in their lives, they can trust the Father to walk through it with them and give them grace and healing.

The historic Baptist church in the Rákospalota neighborhood of Budapest kindly hosted the conference.  It was a blessing for the Millers to get to know the people there and to spend a good part of Sunday with them; Gary was asked to preach the Sunday morning sermon, and a family graciously invited us into their home for a wonderful meal and time of fellowship. In the photo of the pulpit and organ, note the Scripture verse carved on the front of the pulpit:  “The Word of God stands forever.” Pray for the dear brothers and sisters of the Rákospalotai Baptist church as they minister to those around them. Month of Prayer Day 31: Gary and Carolyn Miller

Photo of Gary and Carolyn MillerPray today for Gary and Carolyn Miller, IMB personnel based in the city of Debrecen. (Debrecen on Wikipedia)  Gary serves as Team Leader for the IMB Budapest Team and the Eastern Hungary Team, and Carolyn is the Team Prayer Coordinator.  Ask God to grant them His wisdom in ministry, as well as daily strength, health, and safety as they travel.

Current primary ministries that need your prayer are a church plant in the town of Berekfürdő in partnership with the Karcag Baptist Church, and the continuing development of a gardening outreach ministry, the “Master’s Gardeners” in Debrecen.  (Posts about the Berekfürdő church plant and the gardening program.)

Month of Prayer Day 26: Tiszafüred Church Plant

Today’s prayer request is for the Tiszafüred church plant, a part of the Karcag Baptist church circle in eastern Hungary.  As you pray for this small group, now led entirely by nationals, ask for continued growth both in numbers and in spiritual growth.  Ask the Lord to strengthen them and guide them in how to reach out to their families and community with the love of Christ.

Month of Prayer Day 23: Relationship-building

Real, loving relationships are so important!

  • Pray today for all of our missionary families as we build new relationships in our communities and continue to strengthen old ones.
  • Ask that we will be good listeners and true friends, and that our language and cultural skills will keep growing so that we can be good neighbors and truly share life with those around us.
  • Pray that God will lead us to “persons of peace” in neighborhoods who will welcome us and the gospel witness we bring, willingly serving as a gateway relationship into their family, neighborhood, or community.
